Did you know that there are no fewer than 10 primary schools in Brunssum? Spread out over the various neighbourhoods, but there are other distinguishing factors, too. De Vlindertuin (part of Movare Corporation)

Primary school De Vlindertuin started in the school year of 2016-2017. It was the result of the merger between the Public Primary Summerhill School and Primary School Koningin Beatrix. De Vlindertuin is located on the border of Treebeek and Brunssum and is a privately-run nondenominational primary school. Nondenominational education focuses on social development, irrespective of certain ideological or political principles. All children at De Vlindertuin stay at school during the lunch break. The school has two locations: the junior section is located at 33, Ir. de Katstraat, the upper years at 143A, Wijenweg.

Primary school Langeberg (part of Movare Corporation)

Roman Catholic Primary school Langeberg at 2a, Rembrandtstraat is a Community School where personal and child-oriented education is the key element. It is also a ‘healthy primary school of the future’ with lots of focus on developing a healthy lifestyle. For example, in the afternoon and during lunch break, children can choose between a wide variety of activities, all boasting healthy food choices and exercise.

De Caleidoscoop (part of Movare Corporation)

Roman Catholic Primary school De Caleidoscoop is located at 1, Essenstraat. Its predecessor was Primary School Fatima. At De Caleidoscoop all children stay at school during the lunch break and lunch is eaten together in the classroom. De Caleidoscoop pays a lot of attention to creative development and the feeling of ownership in children.

Primary school Titus Brandsma (part of Movare Corporation)

This school is located in the north of Brunssum at 5, De Gasperistraat and works on class and group overriding education by means of flexible learn and work areas. The school building also hosts the out-of-school care facilities of Humankind and preschool childcare Pukkio. Children at the Titus Brandsma primary school all stay at school during the lunch break.

Primary school Meander (part of Movare Corporation)

This school is located in the Community Facility "Bronsheim" at 23, De Insel in Brunssum East. On 15 June 2023, primary school Meander was awarded the designation ’Excellent’ by the Inspectorate of Education. Primary school Meander has a starters class in which 4 and 5 year olds can stay longer if their development requires. There are also special transition classes for pupils needing more coaching/support and/or additional challenges. The building also hosts playschool Pimpeloentje and day nursery Rollebol.

Primary school De Opstap (part of Movare Corporation)

Primary school De Opstap is located in the centre of Brunssum at 40, Prins Bernhardstraat. The school has taken up residence in the new Community School Brunssum Centre. De Opstap is a Healthy School and has a healthy-school coordinator and an external advisor from the municipal health service to ensure that a healthy lifestyle is embedded in one’s daily routine. De Opstap is also a Euregional school, meaning that besides English also German is taught in the upper years.

Primary school St. Franciscus (part of Innovo Corporation)

Primary school St. Franciscus is situated in Treebeek at 143D, Wijenweg and dates back to 1920. Primary school St. Franciscus has adopted a PBS approach, in which PBS stands for Positive Behaviour Support. PBS is a preventive approach, focusing on (reinforcing) desired behaviour. Pupils are taught ‘lessons in desired conduct’ for instance.

Primary school De Trampoline (part of Movare Corporation)

Like De Opstap, also primary school De Trampoline is located in the centre of Brunssum, in the new Community School Brunssum Centre at 40, Prins Bernhardstraat. De Trampoline is a public primary school that has adopted a number of principles of the Summerhill school, dialogue, play, celebration and work. Children are part of a course group ánd a base group. In a course group children are placed of the same age, learning the basic subjects numeracy, language and reading. Next to that, children of three different ages form a base group. Everyone in this base group can participate at his or her own level, since the teaching material is tailored to the different ages.

Dutch Reformed Primary school Benjamin 

The Dutch Reformed Primary school Benjamin is located at 9, Koolweg in Treebeek and is a school where the Bible, the word of God, is the starting point for education. To avoid having to make concessions to its identity and the educational principles derived from it, primary school Benjamin will not consider any merger with other schools or governing bodies. It is the only reformed primary school in Brunssum. In 2022, Benjamin celebrated its hundredth anniversary.

Special primary education De Boemerang (part of Movare Corporation)

De Boemerang is a school for Special (Primary) Education and adopted this name on 18 July 2003. The school was founded after the merger between SPE Eggerank from Brunssum and SPE In et Wieër from Hoensbroek. De Boemerang is situated in Brunssum East and – like primary school Meander – is part of the Community Facility “Bronsheim” at 21, De Insel. De Boemerang has adopted the Kwink method for social-emotional learning (SEL), which also includes citizenship and media savviness. Kwink offers a smart SEL programme, based on the latest state of scientific knowledge.
